Conservation group fighting to save manatees from starvation

WESTPALMBEACH,Fla.(WWSB)–AFloridanon-profitcalled“BearWarriorsUnited,”saidoneofitsmaingoalsistostopmanateesintheSunshinestatefromstarvation.
TheorganizationfocusesonprotectingandeducatingthepubliconsuchmattersasFlorida’sblackbears,manatees,andotherformsofwildlifehabitatandcorridors.Earlierthismonth,aFloridajudgeruledinfavorofBearWarriorsUnitedandagainstthestatefindingFlorida’sDepartmentofEnvironmentalProtectionwas“Inviolationoftheendangeredspeciesact.”
This,afteramulti-monthinvestigationrevealedFlorida’sIndianRiverLagoon,stretchingfromPalmBeachCountytoDaytonaBeachwheremanateescomeforthewarmwaters,andtofeed,hadbeenpollutedbytoxinsreleasedfromnearbyseptictanks,andwatertreatmentfacilities.Thatresultedintheseagrasstheyneedtosurvivebeingdestroyed.
