Thegrassrootsnonprofithasbeentryingtoacquireaparcelinthatarea–inCharlotteCounty,eastofWinchesterBoulevard−fortwoyearsbecausetheareaisrichinwildlife.
Sincethenonprofitlaunchedinthespringof2020,ithasprotected14.5acresinNorthPort,southSarasotaCountyandCharlotteCounty,includingtheClearwaterStreetparcel.
Itnowprotects48propertiesthataremeanttoprovide“steppingstone”habitatsfortheFloridascrub-jayandmigratingbirds,aswellashabitatforotherspecies,suchasgophertortoises.
Asdevelopmentprogresses,gophertortoisesarerelocated,butFloridascrub-jaysarelefttofendforthemselves.
